I have spent many years working in the different facets of healthcare supply chain, logistics and finance. The first 16 years of my career were spent working for a non-profit multi-hospital acute care health network. From there I took my supply chain knowledge to a non-profit acute physical therapy rehabilitation network. My next step is to use my newly obtained degree to move into the field of IT, with a focus on cybersecurity.
I love technology and how it provides us with endless possibilities for improving life. However, with new technology come new threats. My passion for IT and cybersecurity in particular is a combination of my love of technology and my benevolence for others. I enjoy being able to educate people on ways to protect their personal data, as well as helping companies to ensure their data is protected through security best practices, in conjunction with policy creation and enforcement. I find it rewarding to help protect people from the impacts of cybersecurity negligence and criminal activity.
Working in the healthcare industry I have been able to learn the supply chain and financial aspects of running a large non-profit organization, in a highly regulated environment. My career also allowed me to work directly with doctors and clinicians to learn and understand the day to day fundamentals of a healthcare organization. Though this opportunity I learned what clinicians find important, the challenges they face and why these could have cybersecurity implications.
These experiences in conjunction with my degree provide me with many pertinent skills as an IT professional. These skills allow me to view technology not only with a technical eye but also with the financial and clinical views of the healthcare industry allowing for a well-rounded understanding of best practices and procedures. This helps to create the best possible outcome for all parties involved, as education and policy needs to incorporate the end user perspective. The leadership positions that I’ve held have provided me with the skills necessity to teach and lead others with professionalism and tenacity, which is vital in any large organization.
My long-tern career goal is to obtain a chief information officer position where I can support an organization in their technology goals at a strategic level. I want to be able to mentor other IT professionals to help them grow within this ever changing industry of information technology, and help to make cybersecurity best practices the new normal.
